USAIGC EDUCATION CLINIC
DEVELOPING USAIGC/IAIGC GOLDLEVEL GYMNASTS:
Tony Retrosi USAIGC Education Director
CLINIC TITLE: "GO FOR THE GOLD! and BEYOND!"
COURSE: Skills and Drills to work with your Bronze and Silver gymnasts to have them progress through Gold and Beyond.
VAULT- Vault at Gold and Above is about having a FLIPPING vault. It takes between 18 months to 2 years to OWN a flipping vault. One that does not terrify the coaches and judges! You obviously cannot wait until a gymnast is moving through SILVER to begin the drills for a flipping vault. We will cover the skills and drills needed at each level to have them ready for a flipping vault
BARS- Almost always the most difficult event for girls to master. Unlike the other artistic events it takes a great deal of upper body strength. And where a cartwheel on floor transitions to Beam and even Vault, skills on bars are the outlier. They may share some common shapes and actions but most skills are only on bars.
5 skills a gymnast needs to MASTER to have the base for all skills needed to move to GOLD and Beyond.
• Kip • Cast Handstand• Clear hip/ Toe Handstand
• Giant• Fly Away
The strength needed for these skills and some of the mechanical actions need to be incorporated in every training session. We will cover bar specific strength, body shapes and actions. Starting on floor then moving to the bars. We will work BACKWARDS starting with the flyaway and then concentrating on circling elements. Clear hips, Toe handstands, Giants.
BEAM- As a “typical” male coach I view beam as just skinny straight floor.
That is why I will have someone else present this topic!
FLOOR- The base of our entire sport. It is so important that the skills on floor are taught with a plan in mind. If it is BAD on floor- it is NOT going to be any better on BEAM, BARS or VAULT. Starting with drills for a good cartwheel and front walkover we will follow this through to Front handspring front layouts and Round off Back Handspring Back Layouts.
TWISTING Drills for both front and back skills will also be taught.
Tumble Trak and Trampoline. MORE THAN JUST A PLACE TO PLAY. Drills and skills for all events on Tramp and TT.
Paul: Tony will be at Worlds for 3-4 days to observe and speak to Coaches.
I will pick a date(s) for a 2-day clinic sometime after Worlds in New York and/or New Jersey and CA has requested one. Our goal is to conduct this clinic(s) in one weekend (two or three if needed). We need a Gymnastics Facility with all the bells & whistles. Clinic Fees to be determined by Tony and our paid to Tony. Not USAIGC. I will attend. Lunch will be served.
Currently: California, New York, New Jersey - Dates TBD We have a California Host. NY, NJ????
END JULY OR AUGUST
Maybe we can do a joint NJ & NY Coaches Clinic so the Coaches can get to know one another.
We do need a facility with all the bells & whistles. One or Two days?
